Media Watch: marching to HIS beat!

This was a nice news story to wake up to!  As part of Release Day festivities at the Rock Hall in Cleveland, Trevor had a fun time with the Vermilion High School Sailor marching band of Vermilion, OH.

The news we've been waiting for!

Yesterday it appears we all received a surprise holiday gift...in the Trevor Rabin Fans fanpage on Facebook (created and administered by TR superfan Judy Davis), Trevor logged in to answer a query about the new album project, stating: 

It is done, the cover is done, record company is done.It will will be announced soon.
🥂🥂🥂
I hope it will be enjoyed as much as I had creating it.!

It is titled Rio, for obvious (loving) reasons.  Trevor also shared the cover image (which he created, apparently), but as I don't belong to any Facebook groups I have not seen it.  So hopefully we will learn more official details during the first quarter of 2023.  

(ETA: here is an image of the cover from Henry's site: http://www.bondegezou.co.uk/Rio%20cover.jpg).  If it is one of Trevor's paintings it seems in keeping with his particular style.

The Man of a Thousand Credits: special guest

One of a continuing series in regards to the myriad variety of Trevor’s discography.

It appears Ryan finally pulled his dad into the Captain Cuts cinematic universe (as the saying goes these days)...last month a new single debuted by Canadian pop princess Carly Rae Jepsen, produced and co-written by Ryan and Ben Berger (Ryan McMahon has departed, though no official announcement was made that I'm aware of) and "Talking To Yourself" features a very brief guitar solo from Our Trev.

It's a catchy tune, as are all of Captain Cuts' productions.  The now duo has been very busy of late, both with production for other artists and a few for themselves, and also working in that part of The Jacaranda Room where GROUPLOVE's Never Trust A Happy Song was recorded, as this recent photoset on Instagram courtesy of princedcf illustrates: https://www.instagram.com/p/CjrGu9itAby/

welcome to the New Girl

Some might have been aware of Kyly posting on her Instagram page back in May that she and Ryan were expecting, and yesterday became the proud parents of beautiful Rio (and I'm sure she'll be dancing on the sand by her toddler years).  Congrats to Kyly & Ryan, Trevor & Shelley, and Jayne & Myles.  We know she'll be raised with love and music and all good things.

Fashion Watch: What's black and yellow and rad all over?

Many of us are dedicated followers of the history of Trevor's sartorial choices and one thing we know for sure is if he's worn something once, he's probably going to wear it again.  But even I was surprised of late, courtesy of Alfred Ligammari II sharing his concert photographs of Yes via his Instagram page.  He's posted several shots of the April 26th 80 Dates show in Buffalo, NY and because there are not a lot of photos from the tour entire in circulation it was a bit of a shock to see Trevor's 9012Live shirt revived for this particular performance.  Below are the links for all of the photos from that gig he has posted thus far.

As one of Trevor's most iconic pieces of clothing we know it's had a life even beyond its' appearance during the 9012Live tour (and in the 9012Live concert video) - as Ryan wore it at various times during his tenure with GROUPLOVE, such as this interview in 2013.  THAT JACKET THO - it almost seems as if it's meant to be worn with the shirt.

Let us hope the shirt is well-stored now so that the next Rabin generation can also wear it proud someday.

measuring up

I came across a priceless shot of Ryan by photographer Anna Lee, from a promotional shoot for Captain Cuts earlier this year.  To provide a bit of context, the handprints of YesWest are immortalized as part of the Hollywood RockWalk, located at the Guitar Center superstore on Sunset Blvd. and the induction party was held on May 24, 1994 (as part of the promotion for Talk, one presumes).

So it seems Captain Cuts, who are signed with Epic Records, are ramping up their own recording career - with the recent releases of "Love Like We Used To" and "Cocaina" - and with Ryan taking time off from GROUPLOVE right now it may mean a debut album is in the works.

(It's just about a perfect fit, wouldn't you say?)

As Thanksgiving is nearly upon us here in the US, I am giving thanks for experiencing a wonderful show by ARW at the Orpheum Theatre in Los Angeles last night, and also that Ryan dropped in to take Lou's chair again on "Owner of a Lonely Heart" for a particularly muscular performance.

Jon made the joke that Ryan is "14 years old but doesn't look a day over 14" but in fact is in his 30s now and appears - like his parents - perpetually younger than his years.

Media Watch: Backstage Axxcess interview

An ongoing series wherein I comment on Trevor's recent publicity.

Interestingly - and I don't know if anyone has noticed this (including myself!) - Trevor notes that there are apparently callbacks to some of his scoring themes embedded in the setlist:

I must say that both Jon and Rick really embraced the orchestral side of my career over the past few decades working with directors on movie scores. There are a few sections of the show including the intro to “Cinema” which leads into “Perpetual Change” along with “Awaken” later in the set that we integrate some of the orchestral movements I’ve done in my movie career.

But it appears "Starship Trooper" (only performed once, Trev) has been dropped from the setlist forever.

In fact, the first few shows we were performing “Starship Trooper,” which was a crowd pleaser but Rick and I both realized that specific song neither he nor I were involved in the original recording. Jon graciously suggested that maybe we drop that from the set.

However - and I truly hope this comes to pass - another YesWest favorite might be added in:

I’d say there’s a very good chance the fans in Buffalo will be hearing “Changes.” I’m also looking to start rehearsing “Shoot High Aim Low” from the “Big Generator” album as well. The wonderful thing about the talent in this band is that we can be fluent as we go along and organically incorporate songs that we feel fit the purpose.

And Trevor jokingly confirms my suspicion that he is indeed GROUPLOVE's biggest fan.

Media Watch: new Ticket To Entertainment interview

There are some interesting details in this one, such as Trevor's revelation that Ryan had to talk him into performing "Owner" for the ASCAP Awards ceremony in 2012.

Also, The Hollywood Reporter posted a review of SCORE, with a mention of Trevor's involvement.  For those of us awaiting our DVD/Blu-ray copies from the Indiegogo campaign, it's good news that it appears to be an engaging and enlightening documentary.

exciting times

According to Rick Wakeman's latest Grumpy Old Rick's Ramblings, there's definite cause for celebration this Spring:

Anderson / Rabin & Wakeman continues to gain pace and all is looking tremendous. Performance dates are coming in thick and fast and the new music is just everything I believed it could be. Indeed, as I write this GORR I know that Jon is actually spending a few days with Trevor before Trev scoots off to South Africa for his son’s wedding.

This confirms a comment Jon made in a recent interview regarding going to visit Trevor this month.

Ryan's impending nuptials this month might, in part, explain the big push to completion for #tonequest, as Friday's update on Instagram depicts, with Grammy-nominated mastering engineer Greg Calbi (who also mastered Spreading Rumours).

An ode to the good things!

Today Trevor posted a video on his Facebook page set to the lovely blues stroll of "Georgia on My Mind" paying tribute to many people, places, and dogs beloved to him, and featuring rare family photographs.  Thank you, Maestro, for sharing your world with us fans!

Update on new solo album progress

The past couple days brought some welcome updates from Trevor on his Facebook and Twitter accounts:

...with some great shots of Trevor and Lou working on tracks during prior sessions at The Jacaranda Room.  In a separate post he noted:

There will be some surprise guests on the album, however, i'm not ready to "do" this yet. Lou Molino is already kicking butt on the album, as I know Ryan will do so soon. There is one more drummer who will be playing on the album aside from other musicians, but I can't say yet.

Trevor also noted an upcoming collaboration with guitarist Jason Becker, which was a fitting reminder in regards to the increased attention on social media of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis via the ALS Association's Ice Bucket Challenge.

(Update to the Update):
In a comment posted today on his Facebook page, Trevor stated:

I'm looking at finishing the album by middle to late 2015. I wish it could be earlier, but other projects will slow it down a bit. But this is very much a HUGE passion for me. I think all artists say that the current work is their best. But I really feel this extremely and genuinely the case.

Trevor also noted that the bass he was pictured with is a Wilkins, and here's a photo from when he first received it, to my knowledge:

And this particular photo is proof enough that the inner Rock Star is ready to emerge (it's nice that the drum corner has a photo of Ryan).

Media Watch: special sons

Today, the South Africa edition of Rolling Stone features an interview with Ryan which calls special attention to his roots and what they mean to him.  And as befits someone who quite often in performance wears t-shirts from his dad's old band, the article makes mention of Ryan's tattoo of the South African flag which can be glimpsed in the documentary I'm With You.

With this particular quote I believe Ryan truly is his father's son in expressing a particular sentiment:

“I get the same thrill from playing a show to thousands of people as I do crafting a record and listening back to it as it starts to really make sense to my ears.”
